About Mahavira:

Mahavira is the name most commonly used to refer to the Indian sage Vardhamana who established what are today considered to be the central tenets of Jainism. According to Jain tradition, he was the 24th and the last Tirthankara. Mahavira was also known by the names Vardhamana (i.e., ever advancing) and Sanmati.

Mahavira was immersed in Self-contemplation. He knew that the pleasures of this world were transitory and that they strengthened the letters of Karma. He knew that renunciation would lead to the attainment of eternal bliss.

At the age of thirty Mahavira renounced his kingdom and family, gave up his worldly possessions, and spent twelve years as an ascetic. During these twelve years he spent most of his time meditating. He gave utmost regard to other living beings, including humans, animals and plants, and avoided harming them. He had given up all worldly possessions including his clothes, and lived an extremely austere life. He exhibited exemplary control over his senses while enduring the penance during these years. His courage and bravery earned him the name Mahavira. These were the golden years of his spiritual journey, at the end of which he achieved Kaivalya Gyan. He was now a person of infinite harmony, knowledge and self-control.

Mahavira devoted the rest of his life to preaching the eternal truth of spiritual freedom to people around India. He traveled barefoot and without clothes, in the hardest of climates, and people from all walks of life came to listen to his message. At one point Mahavira had over 400,000 followers. Mahavira's preaching and efforts to spread Jain philosophy is considered the real catalyst to the spread of this ancient religion throughout India and into the mainstream.

Notes from Michelle:

I made my first piece of jewelry for my brother back in the early 1990's. Since then, I have been obsessed with collecting beads wherever I go. If I am in some strange town and run across a bead store or some unique shop, I usually get lost for hours imagining all of the cool pieces I can make with what I find. I've collected beads and other pieces from Pow wows, Native American shops and bead stores around the country. I have also been gifted many cool pieces from friends who know of my obsession.

Everything I make is created with the intentions of healing, earth, power and love. I am especially influenced and inspired by Native American art, symbols and beliefs, and my pieces are intended to reflect that energy.

Each piece is one-of-a-kind. In a world where so much is mass-produced, I feel it is important to maintain a sense of individuality, so I never make the same thing twice. I feel everyone should have something unique that speaks to them.

Enjoy!
